The weekend’s sunshine made it almost possible to imagine the summer flying ant season, so we’re gearing up for a second flying ant survey and are hoping to enlist even more support.
We need data from multiple years to help us understand whether the pattern we saw in 2012 (two peaks in flying ant activity) will happen regularly or whether it was related to the specific weather conditions. We’re also going to increase the accuracy of the survey by asking people to send us samples of flying ants. If you’re able to help us with this, please fill in this form so we can post you a sample tube and instructions. It would also be great if you could spread the word to friends and family. Thank you very much to everyone who has shown their support for this project.
Other Biology Week plans are coming along well, and we’re keen to hear from people who want to get involved. Particularly exciting is a day of exploring nature on Sunday 13th October, and we’d love to hear from nature lovers who want to share their passion. We’re working with the British Mycological Society who are organising UK Fungus Day, which will be a celebration of fungi, the good and the bad. If you would like to run a fungal foray or other fungus-related event please get in touch.
We have just created a document about what’s going on and how to organise an event. This will be kept updated on the Biology Week page.
